Blog Post:
Pre-Production Process
Script break downs are my favorite step; They ensure the opportunity to provide a productive and happy set. Breakdowns allow for the extra thoughts of bringing pastries to set or realizing that “Margret’s dog” (or whoever) might need a cozy bed, water bowl and a snack while on set.
After a writer’s meeting with me, we’ll both have a good understanding of our creative. Who we’re trying to reach, what they should be doing afterwards and how we’re going to measure our success. Then, I’ll come back with a carefully crafted proposal, customized to meet our goal!
All proposal’s will vary, but will generally outline all the important details of the creative like: any key messages, the creative narrative, storyboards, treatments, budgets, calendar release dates and more! It’s honestly my time to shine and transform your problem into a creative narrative that we can use to drive fans or clients to engage and make more sales!
After we review the proposal and agree on our creative, you’ll fund the production and it’s off to my absolute favorite part - script breakdowns🕺, logistics and other technical jargon type paperwork; Pre-Production! 📑
Each production comes with a particular stack of paper work…and I will deliver.
Pre-Production has a special place in my heart. I’m a logistics nut and completely nerd out on all the latest gas surrounding pre-production tools, techniques and cheat codes.

I mean, if i had the time and money I’d spend it making a pre-prod cheat code magazine ® for the world to read!
Inside the ‘pre-prod’
I’ll be spending my time creating and mapping out our video production with important paperwork like: scripts, storyboards, mood boards, script breakdowns, location reports and schedules. Really, anything logistical to help me while on set; to know what I need, when I need it and how I need it; before I even knew “it” existed. But. Traditionally, it’s to map out the production’s budget, schedule, location, cast, crew and gear.
Take a look behind the curtain, here’s my “Pre-Prod” Process
My Fav. - Script Breakdowns
A Dance...
Out of all the steps, I got to say my absolute favorite piece of pre-production, is the script breakdown portion - and really it’s not steps (new graphic later) in pre-production - but more of a back-and-forth between a few of them. A dance. But the script breakdown is only a portion of the essential process.
In the overall scope of pre-production, I’m taking a deep dive into our video proposal and fine-tuning our production by making a preliminary production schedule, then checking that against logistics to see if the shooting script needs to be adapted to accommodate. All this back and forth in pre-prod is to ensure an accurate budget and schedule.
Be Happy. Don't Worry.
After, I’m able to start breaking down the script into smaller pieces. Taking note of production elements & pieces, situations and issues that take into account the personal, emotional and psychological factors of our talent cast and crew. Which leads us to why script break downs are my favorite step; They ensure the opportunity to provide a productive and happy set. Breakdowns allow for the extra thoughts of bringing pastries to set or realizing that “Margret’s dog” (or whoever) might need a cozy bed, water bowl and a snack while on set.
Breakdowns allow for the extra considerations during production, like the thought of bringing pastries to set or realizing that someones dog might need a cozy bed during the shoot....maybe a water bowl and a snack while on set wouldn't hurt either.
The Final countdown.
After the breakdown, I’ll generate storyboards, mood boards, securing talent and locations or gathering any permits that I might need to pickup for our production. Then, we’ll schedule our shooting days and I’ll come out to do a tech scout of the location; taking final notes for set dressing, power, and other tasks like noting where gear might be stored during the shoot.

Next it’s off to the shoot & then editing a great video! All of this culminating to one film, or perhaps a video campaign for your new product or a video release strategy for your next single. There’s a lot to it and I’ve been lucky enough to see both large and small productions.
ROI?
But all of this leads to nothing if you don’t market your creative towards a goal, while analyzing the viewers response and journey. That’s the key to having a great video, film or project; having the power to wake up in the morning and decide what you need to make, in order to reach your goal.
Let’s collaborate!
